Interview – Marcus Bancroft
By Kelly Meacock
Q. You have been in bands, a folk band, and performed as a solo artist. Can you tell us about the differences between these playing experiences?
A. I very much like the band dynamic in that you play off other musicians and it takes my playing and the music to areas that I wouldn’t go if playing on my own. Playing solo is nice because you can do your own thing and go off on tangents, but I must admit my favourite experiences have been playing country music in a band format, and also locking down in a heavy riffing band when I was younger.
Q. What was the difference in styles played between the bands you have played in to date?
A. I used to play in a rock band which was a very enjoyable experience — lots of energy, lots of gigs, and great experiences. Played a lot of blues and folk solo, and in recent years have been enjoying playing country and gospel music. Have been playing a few different instruments at church also. It’s nice to have a go at as many different types of music as possible. It’s good to have to start again and learn new things.
Q. What are the different styles of guitar that you have played?
A. Bit of everything — rock, blues, country, open tunings.
Q. Do you have a favourite guitar/s?
A. I have a Weissenborn copy that I like a lot, and a little ¾ slide guitar that is cool. My favourite to play recently has been a Fender Telecaster through a Vox amp.
Q. You have recorded an album and a number of EPs. How different were the recording processes that you used for these projects?
A. I used to be involved playing for bands I’ve been in, or playing for others in studios, but have been getting into developing a home recording studio recently, which I’ve enjoyed. It’s such a science — I have a lot to learn.
Q. What were the differences between a traditional recording process and when you recorded yourself?
A. It’s nice when someone else is pushing the buttons. I struggle recording myself — it’s great to have others’ opinions.
Q. Do you enjoy songwriting?
A. Very much, but recently I prefer to work with others, collaborating.
Q. What process do you use for songwriting? Do you find it easy?
A. Start out with a riff and hum some words. It used to be easier.
Q. You have played in festivals and blues clubs in the UK. What was that like?
A. I really liked playing in the UK — smaller venues and a culture of listening. It was fun. Bit more of an indoors culture, but playing outside is what’s so great about home.
Q. To this date, what has been your favourite gig?
A. Lots of nice times, no real favourites. Anytime where people don’t seem to have any interest, and all of a sudden everything comes together and everyone who is playing and anyone watching begins to enjoy or listen.
Q. Do you wish to record another album soon?
A. Hoping to record some stuff with about three different projects this year. Not much solo — lots of collaboration. Loving country at present, but missing rock in recent times. Having flashbacks.
Q. Do you have plans to play a series of live shows or gigs in the near future?
A. Not sure at this time — mostly focussed on recording and writing with others for the next few months, but always enjoy playing live.
Q. Would you like to, or do you plan to do an Australian tour?
A. Not sure — my wife is due to have a baby today! Will have to see, but will gig again for sure soon.
